    Analysis of Simulated and Experimental Noise Sources of Boeing 777 Main Gear Model via CLEAN in 3D

    Previously obtained experimental and simulated phased microphone array data for the NASA 26%-scale model of a six-wheel main landing gear, with and without a toboggan-shaped noise reduction fairing, were analyzed using the CLEAN technique in three dimensions. The model is a high-fidelity representation of the Boeing 777-200 aircraft main landing gear. The reprocessing of the acoustic data was undertaken to address the deficiencies encountered in the source localization (beamform) maps and the integrated farfield spectra at mid to high frequencies in our previous study, where conventional array processing techniques were applied to the same data sets. Application of the CLEAN approach resulted in higher quality beamform maps with many of the previously observed side lobes either eliminated or suppressed significantly. As a result, integration of the experimentally and computationally based maps showed substantial improvement in the quality of the high-frequency spectral content relative to the corresponding spectra generated via conventional array processing, thus extending the good agreement achieved between the measured and predicted farfield spectra from 8 kHz to 14 kHz in model-scale frequencies. In addition, an examination of the simulated surface pressure fluctuations, off-surface flow field, and three-dimensionally constructed noise sources was conducted to determine the cause of the subtle discrepancies between measured and predicted sound pressure levels that occur in the 1,800 Hz to 4,000 Hz model-scale frequency range

    Estimating novel potential drug targets of Plasmodium falciparum by analysing the metabolic network of knock-out strains in silico

    Malaria is one of the world’s most common and serious diseases causing death of about 3 million people each year. Its most severe occurrence is caused by the protozoan Plasmodium falciparum. Biomedical research could enable treating the disease by effectively and specifically targeting essential enzymes of this parasite. However, the parasite has developed resistance to existing drugsmaking it indispensable to discover new drugs. We have established a simple computational tool which analyses the topology of the metabolic network of P. falciparum to identify essential enzymes as possible drug targets.Weinvestigated the essentiality of a reaction in the metabolic network by deleting (knocking-out) such a reaction in silico. The algorithmselected neighbouring compounds of the investigated reaction that had to be produced by alternative biochemical pathways. Using breadth first searches, we tested qualitatively if these products could be generated by reactions that serve as potential deviations of the metabolic flux. With this we identified 70 essential reactions. Our results were compared with a comprehensive list of 38 targets of approved malaria drugs. When combining our approach with an in silico analysis performed recently [Yeh, I., Hanekamp, T., Tsoka, S., Karp, P.D., Altman, R.B., 2004. Computational analysis of Plasmodium falciparum metabolism: organizing genomic information to facilitate drug discovery. Genome Res. 14, 917–924] we could improve the precision of the prediction results. Finally we present a refined list of 22 new potential candidate targets for P. falciparum, half of which have reasonable evidence to be valid targets against micro-organisms and cancer

    Spatial effects of Fano resonance in local tunneling conductivity in vicinity of impurity on semiconductor surface

    We present the results of local tunneling conductivity spatial distribution detailed theoretical investigations in vicinity of impurity atom for a wide range of applied bias voltage. We observed Fano resonance in tunneling conductivity resulting from interference between resonant tunneling channel through impurity energy level and direct tunneling channel between the tunneling contact leads. We have found that interference between tunneling channels strongly modifies form of tunneling conductivity measured by the scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) depending on the distance value from the impurity.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Evaluation of aircraft microwave data for locating zones for well stimulation and enhanced gas recovery

    Imaging radar was evaluated as an adjunct to conventional petroleum exploration techniques, especially linear mapping. Linear features were mapped from several remote sensor data sources including stereo photography, enhanced LANDSAT imagery, SLAR radar imagery, enhanced SAR radar imagery, and SAR radar/LANDSAT combinations. Linear feature maps were compared with surface joint data, subsurface and geophysical data, and gas production in the Arkansas part of the Arkoma basin. The best LANDSAT enhanced product for linear detection was found to be a winter scene, band 7, uniform distribution stretch. Of the individual SAR data products, the VH (cross polarized) SAR radar mosaic provides for detection of most linears; however, none of the SAR enhancements is significantly better than the others. Radar/LANDSAT merges may provide better linear detection than a single sensor mapping mode, but because of operator variability, the results are inconclusive. Radar/LANDSAT combinations appear promising as an optimum linear mapping technique, if the advantages and disadvantages of each remote sensor are considered

    Program on stimulating operational private sector use of Earth observation satellite information

    Ideas for new businesses specializing in using remote sensing and computerized spatial data systems were developd. Each such business serves as an 'information middleman', buying raw satellite or aircraft imagery, processing these data, combining them in a computer system with customer-specific information, and marketing the resulting information products. Examples of the businesses the project designed are: (1) an agricultural facility site evaluation firm; (2) a mass media grocery price and supply analyst and forecaster; (3) a management service for privately held woodlots; (4) a brokerage for insulation and roofing contractors, based on infrared imagery; (5) an expanded real estate information service. In addition, more than twenty-five other commercially attractive ideas in agribusiness, forestry, mining, real estate, urban planning and redevelopment, and consumer information were created. The commercial feasibility of the five business was assessed. This assessment included market surveys, revenue projections, cost analyses, and profitability studies. The results show that there are large and enthusiastic markets willing to pay for the services these businesses offer, and that the businesses could operate profitably

    Enhancing the Benefits of Written Emotional Disclosure Through Response Training

    Writing about a personal stressful event has been found to have psychological and physical health benefits, especially when physiological response increases during writing. Response training was developed to amplify appropriate physiological reactivity in imagery exposure. The present study examined whether response training enhances the benefits of written emotional disclosure. Participants were assigned to either a written emotional disclosure condition (n = 113) or a neutral writing condition (n = 133). Participants in each condition wrote for 20 minutes on three occasions and received response training (n = 79), stimulus training (n = 84) or no training (n = 83). Heart rate and skin conductance were recorded throughout a 10-minute baseline, 20-minute writing, and a 10-minute recovery period. Self-reported emotion was assessed in each session. One month after completing the sessions, participants completed follow-up assessments of psychological and physical health outcomes. Emotional disclosure elicited greater physiological reactivity and self-reported emotion than neutral writing. Response training amplified physiological reactivity to emotional disclosure. Greater heart rate during emotional disclosure was associated with the greatest reductions in event-related distress, depression, and physical illness symptoms at follow-up, especially among response trained participants. Results support an exposure explanation of emotional disclosure effects and are the first to demonstrate that response training facilitates emotional processing and may be a beneficial adjunct to written emotional disclosure

We derive a large-deviations principle for the empirical measure of the sizes of all the connected components of (Formula presented.), registered according to microscopic sizes (i.e., of finite order), macroscopic ones (i.e., of order N), and mesoscopic ones (everything in between). The rate function explicitly describes the microscopic and macroscopic components and the fraction of vertices in components of mesoscopic sizes. Moreover, it clearly captures the well known phase transition at t = 1 as part of a comprehensive picture. The proofs rely on elementary combinatorics and on known estimates and asymptotics for the probability that subgraphs are connected. We also draw conclusions for the strongly related model of the multiplicative coalescent, the Marcus–Lushnikov coagulation model with monodisperse initial condition, and its gelation phase transition

    An in silico Approach to Detect Efficient Malaria Drug Targets to Combat the Malaria Resistance Problem

    Resistance to malaria drugs is a major challenging problem in most parts of the world especially in the African continent where about ninety per cent of malaria cases occur. As a response to this alarming problem, the World Health Organisation (W.H.O) recommends that all countries experiencing resistance to conventional monotherapies, such as chloroquine, amodiaquine or sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine, should use combination therapies [1]. Therefore there is a need to discover new drug targets that are able to target the malarial parasite at distinct pathways for an efficient malaria drug. In this paper, we presented a machine-learning tool which is able to identify novel drug targets from the metabolic network of Plasmodium falciparum. With our tool we identified among others 19 drug targets confirmed from literature which we analyzed further with a sophisticated gene expression analysis tool. Our data was clustered using common distance similarity measurements and hierarchical clustering to propose a profound combination of drug targets. Our result suggests that two or more enzymatic reactions from the list of our drug targets which span across about ten pathways (Table 2) could be combined to target at distinct time points in the parasite's intraerythrocytic developmental cycle to detect efficient malaria drug target combination

    Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) using multiphoton excitation techniques is now finding an important place in quantitative imaging of protein-protein interactions and intracellular physiology. We review here the recent developments in multiphoton FLIM methods and also present a description of a novel multiphoton FLIM system using a streak camera that was developed in our laboratory.
